Old fashioned mints – Straight from Grandma’s box
I was up for an adventure. Who doesn’t love a good mystery? I couldn’t have asked for a better surprise than this when combining a few ingredients from a hand written note from my great grandmother’s old card box stuffed with goodies of cut out recipes and handwritten notes. Sometimes written with someone’s name across the top; you can almost create a story to go along with the note. A quaint conversation over coffee, talking with the neighbours on the front porch, or maybe a church chat on a relaxing Sunday morning.
Back then, recipes were not something we just pulled up with a quick google search with of endless choices at our fingertips!
Only 4 Ingredients
Did I mention this was easy. Food was easy back then. Ingredients were simple and they made things from readily available sources. I was even a little skeptical myself of how these ingredients would come together. Orange juice? Okay we’ll give it a try. What was the worse that could happen. Maybe clean up a little mess from a failed experiment.
Icing sugar, orange juice, food color, and peppermint extract
That’s literally all you need to put these together. It did get me thinking though. An experiment for another day could be to play around with the flavours. I have some Watkins root beer flavouring, and even some caramel that might make a good switch up.
The results are a refreshing mint that melts in your mouth and has the consistency of the old coloured mints that restaurants used to have sitting on the counter for patrons to help themselves on the way out before everyone realized that they were incredibly unsanitary.
Perfect for a Holiday Candy dish
These really make a great Holiday candy dish to leave out for guests. Or to add a splash of colour to a cookie package. Or they can simply be an everyday mint. However you decide to use them, enjoy!
