Need an idea for that old milk can kicking around?
So I am a little confused these days and can’t decide whether it is still the last of those dog days of summer to lounge around the pool, or time to cosy up the house for fall fires, and smells of earthy stews. The summer temperatures linger in the daytime but rapidly cool in the evening around here. I barely know how to dress myself for the weather. Although the date on the calendar says I should put on my cotton sweaters and jeans, it’s still too hot for anything more than capris and sandals!
Hence to say, many people walking past my house may wonder why I have a pumpkin on my front porch! Even I am surprised by that. I am usually not this far ahead of the game. However, after being inspired by a picture I had seen scrolling through Pinterest at tanyascreativespace.blogspot I was set on creating something for my own porch.
I already had an old milk can kicking around that I was once using to store wild bird seed in. This particular project I saw was more Spring themed, but I wanted something more versatile. I decided to go with birch sticks and wrap mini led’s around them. (Costco sells the lights in packs of 4 strings for only $12.99 CDN, by far the cheapest I have seen them!) Then I used silk flowers to change with the seasons. So the flowers don’t fall in, you can use floral foam, but I just taped them in place on the inside where no one will see.
This is such an easy DIY project! Really the only challenge at all was making sure the stencil is even and spaced out properly. To paint the lettering, I just used a paint marker that I bought at Joann.
So for now, if you are to visit my home, the front will look like a crisp Autumn day; then you can go out back and jump in the pool for a refreshing swim. I am going to bask in the last days of this glorious sunshine we are so lucky to have!
